SENSE Theatre® - A Stage of Hope For Children With Autism

SENSE Theatre® is an innovative theatrical intervention program developed by Blythe Corbett, Ph.D., at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center to enhance social competence in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Blending behavioral therapy (e.g., in vivo modeling, video modeling) with theatrical techniques (e.g., script reading, role-playing, improvisation), SENSE Theatre® creates a supportive stage for learning verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction, and movement.

Key features include:

  • 6-week program with weekly sessions focused on theater-based learning.
  • 110-page manual (PDF) with video files on a password-protected Vanderbilt site.
  • Evidence-based strategies for ASD children, adaptable for group settings.
  • Options for digital download ($100) or with printed hard copy ($130).

Benefits: SENSE Theatre® improves social skills and emotional expression, as demonstrated in a randomized trial (Corbett et al., 2015). It fosters confidence and peer interaction in a fun, creative environment, supporting long-term development for children with ASD and their families.
